This course will attempt to show how movements of languages and peoples are effected through need for food and later by the implementation of empires both secular and religious.

１．Introduction: definitions of migration and colonialism. ２．Tribes, races and ethnicity. ３．The current "multicultural" debate. ４．The Indo-Europeans: homeland and migrations. ５．The Indo-European sound laws. ６．The Germanic migrations. ７．The migrations of Hellenes and Romans. ８．The Roman Empire and its languages. ９．The Slavonic migrations and the Russian Empire. 10．Formation of European nation-states and their languages. 11．Beginnings of European colonization and Christianity. 12．British, French, Spanish, Portugues and Dutch expansion. 13．Islam's expansion and the role of Arabic. 14．Modern concepts of "first" and "native" languages. 15．Revision and questions.
